Senior Assistant Golf Course Superintendent
Carmel Country Club, located in Charlotte, North Carolina is seeking a Senior Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join and lead the maintenance team on the South Course. The chosen candidate will play a major part in the upcoming renovation with Rees Jones design.
The Senior Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will report directly to the Superintendent, Micah Pennybaker and Director of Agronomy, Brannon Goodrich.
Club Highlights:
- Staff: 50 full time employees and 15 seasonal employees
- Maintenance Budget: $5 million dollar operating budget with the Capital budget averaging between $500-$700k annually.
- Annual Rounds: 35,000 on the South Course
- Typical work schedule: In-season - 40-60 hours per week (depending on if you work the weekend). Off-season: 40-45 hours per week. This position is responsible for working every 3rd weekend year-round excluding special events.
- Grass types: Greens - A1 Bentgrass greens, Zeon Zoysia tees/fairways, Celebration Bermuda rough, and Fescue in the shade.
- Equipment: Predominantly leased and purchased Toro equipment
- Irrigation system: Toro Lynx
- Future projects: Complete bunker redesign and reconstruction beginning November 2024. In addition, there are plans for lake dredging, a stone wall construction, and a tee expansion to the par 3 course.

INITIAL PRIORITIES OF POSITION:
- Create relationships with the current team and staff
- Work with Director and Superintendent to facilitate and organize a complete bunker renovation
- Motivate, recruit, train, and supervise a growing team of 30+ team members
- Assist with the daily operation of the golf course
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND APTITUDE:
- Assist the Director of Agronomy, the South Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents with the daily maintenance, operation, and management of the golf course.
- Manage Bentgrass greens in the transition zone.
- The scheduling, supervising, and training of the 30+ golf course maintenance team members in the daily operations of the golf course.
- Assist in the proper calibration, mixing/disposing, and application of fertilizers and pesticides used on the golf course based on the agronomic program.
- The proper operation, troubleshooting, and application of the irrigation system as required by the turfgrass to promote a strong root system and healthy turf.
- Monitor sub surface airflow with the Sub-Air Elite Series system installed in 2023 with periodic preventative maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Directing and successfully completing small projects.
- Monitoring and record keeping of the weather that affects our turfgrass.
- Recruitment and training of interns and future true professionals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3-5+ years of golf course maintenance and management experience
- Certificate, 2-year or 4-year degree in a turf related field
- A proven track record of growth within the industry with a desire to continue to grow and learn
- Currently maintains a Pesticide Applicators License or have the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire
