Menlo Country Club, located in Woodside, California is seeking a Golf Course Superintendent to join their dedicated team. The incumbent will work closely with the Director of Agronomy, Chris Eckstrom and will be responsible for year-round, day-to-day on-site operation and oversight of golf course maintenance and associated administrative functions. 

Club Highlights:

  • Staff: 21 Full-time and 1 seasonal
  • Annual Rounds: 24,000
  • Typical work schedule: In-season - 50-55 hours per week, Out of season - 40-45 hours per week
  • Grass types: Greens - Tyee 007 Bentgrass, Tees & Fairways - Santa Ana Hybrid Bermuda, and Native Roughs
  • Equipment: Toro 
  • Irrigation system: Toro Lynx 
  • Future projects: On-site water treatment facility/skim plant - Early 2025, and a new maintenance facility - feasibility study in progress
  • Future events: The Big Match - annual match-play event featuring UC Berkeley and Stanford University Men's and Women's teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, APTITUDE AND OTHER TRAITS:

Personnel Functions:

  • Provide administrative support and guidance for on-course programs and objectives.
  • Supervise staff: interview, hire, train, motivate, and terminate as needed.
  • Conduct 90-day and annual performance reviews for Greens Keepers to encourage leadership and excellence.
  • Recommend raises and promotions, oversee work schedules, and uphold club mission and operational standards.
  • Maintain personnel records and promote teamwork by fostering commitment to club values.
  • Continuously improve training programs for fertilizer and pesticide applications, safety, and equipment operation.
Golf Course Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with management and staff.
  • Communicate regularly with the Director of Agronomy regarding events, maintenance, and special projects.
  • Possess expertise in managing cool- and warm-season grasses, including fertilization, pesticide application, and turf health.
  • Maintain irrigation systems, including troubleshooting, repairs, and scheduling via a central computer.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of golf course equipment (mowers, tractors, sprayers, rollers, etc.).
  • Oversee maintenance of golf course buildings, including bathrooms, pump stations, offices, and storage facilities.
  • Manage environmental health and hazardous waste programs while ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Represent the department in monthly Safety Committee meetings.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
  • Monitor progress toward financial goals and report regularly to leadership.
  • Oversee purchasing of golf course supplies with Director of Agronomy approval.
  • Build and maintain relationships with vendors to ensure high-quality service and pricing.
  • Complete and submit employee payroll efficiently and accurately
Planning & Teamwork:
  • Drive short- and long-term strategic planning efforts, aligning with club objectives.
  • Encourage proactive management by promoting systematic, goal-oriented planning.
  • Submit weekly objectives every Monday morning.
  • Conduct pre-shift and post-shift meetings with the Director of Agronomy and maintenance team.
  • Lead initiatives for safety, compliance, and training while fostering high-performance, cross-functional teams.
Miscellaneous Responsibilities:
  • Protect company assets and maintain high housekeeping standards across all facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, federal, and state regulations.
  • Promote and practice safe working conditions to meet annual injury reduction goals.
  • Continually seek ways to improve club operations and maintain a competitive advantage.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: 
 
  • Salary: $115,000-$125,000, depending on experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Soil Science, or related field (Associate's or Bachelor's)
  • 5+ years of golf course maintenance experience
  • 3+ years of management experience
  • Ability to obtain a California Pesticide License within 120 days of employment is required
  • Strong understanding of golf and modern golf course management practices.
  • Spanish proficiency preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to stand, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity, vision, and hearing sufficient for operating office equipment and communicating effectively.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
